The King’s Relay Baton was displayed at the British High Commission in Yaounde on Tuesday, July 22, symbolizing Cameroon’s preparedness for the 2026 Commonwealth Games to take place in Glasgow.
The ceremony to welcome the King’s Baton Relay to Cameroon took place under the watchful eyes of the Deputy British High Commissioner to Cameroon, Robert Fitzpatrick and the President of the Commonwealth Games Association Colonel Hamad Kalkaba Malboum.
The King’s Relay Baton is a traditional, symbolic object produced in the United Kingdom and sent across the 74 Commonwealth countries and territories in the build-up to the Common Wealth Games.
Speaking during the event, Robert Fitzpatrick said Cameroon stands proudly at the heart of the organisation. He said the arrival of the baton in the country is more than a ceremonial moment; “it is a celebration of the ideals that bind us together: friendship, inclusion and a collective vision for a brighter future” said the British diplomat.
The Baton was later taken to the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education for presentation, then headed to the country’s largest city Douala carrying with it “the spirit of unity, sustainability, and connection,” according to the High Commission.
Speaking to reporters after the event at the British High Commission, Victorine Fomum, who has won over 70 medals in several disciplines and now is the National Technical Director in charge of female football in Cameroon, said her country has to prepare hard to make a difference at the event.
“Cameroon needs to prepare hard to increase the number of participants and also have the Olympic spirit of fairplay, solidarity and inclusion,” she advised.

Besides the change in the name, the games have witnessed another major innovation.
In this year’s event every country or territory has its own baton, a complete break-away from the traditional one-baton-for-all.
Each nation or territory decorates its baton and returns it to the UK for a final appraisal prior to the games from July 23 to August 2 next year.
Cameroon’s green-red-yellow and a gold star flag, plus its rich topography and habitats are conspicuous on the baton that caught everyone’s attention at the ceremony on Tuesday.
The relay began on March 10 at Buckingham Palace where his Majesty King Charles III placed his message into the first baton, according to a statement from the British High Commission.
It will last 500 days.
The Commonwealth Games is a quadrennial [every four years] international multi-sports event that brings together athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations.
The games began as the British Empire Games in 1930 and have evolved over time. It was known as the British Empire Games until 1950, the British Empire and Commonwealth Games until 1966, and the British Commonwealth Games until 1974. Since the 1978 edition, the official name is the Commonwealth Games, reflecting its modern identity while maintaining its historic link to Britain.
